Dyson Omni-glide: everything we know about Dyson’s latest cordless cleaner

The Dyson Omni-glide represents a change for the brand. Until recently, Dyson has focused on a one-size-fits-all approach to cordless vacuum cleaners. From the V7 to the V11, every cordless cleaner the brand released was a new iteration that, broadly speaking, featured an upgraded take on the same technology.

For example, battery life improved from a maximum of 30 minutes with the V7 to over 60 minutes with the V11, and then a swappable battery was introduced, to double its cleaning time.

And, although you could get a choice of add-ons and accessories, like the Animal editions that come with cleaning tools optimised for homes with pets, all the vacs were designed to do the same job in the same way.

But not any more, as Dyson is now producing far more specialist cleaners. The first was the V11 Outsize, a supersized version of the V11, specifically designed to solve the problems that come with cleaning larger houses. (Is it successful? You can find out more in our hands-on review.) And now the Omni-glide has arrived, and it’s designed for pretty much the exact opposite: smaller homes with hard flooring.

When is the Omni-glide’s release date?

The Omni-glide is currently available to

, the Omni-glide will be launching in Australia on 27 May and will be available to buy from .

Its UK release date is TBC.

What is the price of the Dyson Omni-glide?

It costs $399.99 in the US. This makes it one of Dyson’s most affordable vacuum cleaners. You’d have to go all the way back to to find another model for the same price.

In Australia,, it’ll cost AUD 599.99.

As yet, we don’t know what its UK price will be.

What makes the Omni-glide different from the V-series?

The Omni-glide is Dyson’s smallest, lightest vacuum cleaner. As the name suggests, it’s all about manoeuvrability. It’s named for its omni-directional head, which can turn 360 degrees and move in any direction, thanks to the swivel joint at the top and four casters underneath. Twist the handle and the head will rotate 90 degrees, so you can even vacuum sideways.

But what’s really interesting about the Omni-glide is what it can’t do. As we said, it’s a specialist cordless vacuum cleaner. It’s designed to work on hard floors only. This is a bit of a change of direction for Dyson as it’s definitely a niche product: either one for city-dwellers or a second vacuum cleaner for people with larger homes to keep as a kitchen run-around.

What are the Omni-glide’s features?

The Omni-glide represents a big redesign for Dyson. It looks unlike any of the V-series cordless cleaners. Partly, this is down to the all-new cleaning head. It features a double brush bar, which helps it to clean efficiently in every direction.

But the handle and (removable) battery have been redesigned as well. The new, slim form sees the battery clip in at the top of the handle. It also looks as though the divisive trigger, which needs to be held down while the vacuum cleaner is in use, has been removed in favour of a simple On/Off button.

These changes have helped to make the Omni-glide Dyson’s lightest vacuum cleaner, weighing just 4.18lbs/ 1.9kg (which makes it far lighter than even the Halo Capsule cordless, the lightest full-power cordless vac we’ve ever tested).

It’s slender as well, measuring 42.4×9.1×20.6cm (42.4×3.6×8.1in), so it can fit into narrow gaps. The new design also means it can be laid perfectly flat, so it’s easy to get under sofas and other low pieces of furniture.

But the lightness and manoeuvrability come at a price. The Omni-glide has a run time of only 20 minutes, which is a third of the battery life of the V11. Its suction isn’t as powerful either, with only 8 cyclones, compared to the V11’s 14. And its dustbin is tiny: only 0.05g/ 0.23 litres.

You can say goodbye to the bells and whistles too: the Omni-glide won’t feature the LCD touchscreen that you see on the V11.

Which accessories does the Omni-glide come with?

In the US, the Omni-glide comes with only four accessories: the omnidirectional soft roller cleaning head, a combi crevice tool (which combines a brush and crevice nozzle), a docking station and charger. This is a far cry from the Outsize, which comes with ten tools and attachments (plus its dock).

As we know, Dyson often changes which tools are available for each territory, so it’s possible that the attachments available in Australia and the UK will be different.

But, the Omni-glide will be compatible with some other Dyson tools, which you can buy separately. For the US, these include the (for soft surfaces and upholstery), the (for illuminating and cleaning dark spaces) and the worktop tool.
