First signs of Amazfit’s rugged T-Rex Pro 2 smartwatch surface

The Amazfit T-Rex was a surprise entry from the wearables specialist when it introduced its first rugged timepiece at CES 2020. The T-Rex Pro followed just over a year on and now, we’ve gained our first glimpse of the T-Rex Pro 2.

While brands like Garmin and Polar dominate the rugged wearable space, the bulk of their offerings are often pricey, relative to the wider smartwatch and fitness tracker market. Take Polar’s latest Grit X Pro, for example – it’s the kind of watch that the T-Rex line is modelled after but costs more than three times as much.

As with many of Amazfit’s wearables, the T-Rex series has always been about offering features tailored to outdoor activity tracking, in a hardy design at a competitive price point, and we don’t expect the T-Rex Pro 2 to be any different in this regard.

When does the T-Rex Pro 2 launch?

While Amazfit has yet to formally reveal anything about this expected forthcoming wearable, GSMArena was sent exclusive imagery and details from an unnamed source referencing both the T-Rex Pro 2 and a more premium rugged watch dubbed the ‘Amazfit Vienna’.

While the source didn’t provide any specifics on pricing or availability, the T-Rex Pro 2 will reportedly arrive on the market this summer (which would suggest some time between late June and late September), much later than the two previous entries in the T-Rex series launched.

How much will the T-Rex Pro 2 be?

With no sign of leaked pricing to work with, it makes sense to use the T-Rex and T-Rex Pro as guides for the price of the Pro 2, at this early stage.

  • Amazfit T-Rex = £129/€139.99/US$139.99
  • Amazfit T-Rex Pro = £139/€169.90/US$179.99

While the Pro upped the ante over the original T-Rex in a number of ways, including price, it’s likely the Pro 2 might not cost that much more; simply in order to meet existing fans’ expectations concerning the series’ affordable quality.

What features will the T-Rex Pro 2 offer?

If authentic, the leaked imagery provided to GSMArena confirms a fundamental trait that runs through both current T-Rex models: its design.

As with the original T-Rex and Pro, the Pro 2 looks to leverage the same (or at least a very similar) physical proportions, sporting what looks like a moulded polycarbonate casing with four metal hardware buttons (two on each side), as before.

Interestingly, as well as a range of colours (Astro Black, Wild Green, Desert Khaki and Astro Gold), the face-on images show what looks like a new element on the right side of the watch’s face. It resembles a crown guard but with the button placement as it is, the Pro 2 doesn’t appear to have an actual crown to guard; so for the time being its purpose remains a mystery.

Existing T-Rex watches come with a highly-flexible integrated silicone wrist strap that isn’t user-replaceable and by the looks of it, the Pro 2 hasn’t traded that in for interchangeable or customisable straps as yet; so while comfortable, make sure you’re happy with your chosen Pro 2’s strap colour before purchase because that’s all you’re going to get.

As for the internals, the main upgrade will reportedly be an improved BioTracker 3.0 PPG sensor; measuring both heart rate and blood oxygen, and informing the 150+ trackable sport modes, sleep data and stress data.

The Pro 2 also features 32MB RAM and 512MB onboard storage, suggesting a more modest user experience than the likes of an Apple Watch (as with previous entries) and no room for offline music storage/playback.

The display has grown (compared to last year’s Pro) and as such, resolution has increased too; with a 1.39in 454×454 panel that boasts a 1000nit maximum brightness, while an accelerometer, gyroscope, barometer, geomagnetic sensor, ambient light sensor, dual-band GPS and Bluetooth 5.0 all also feature.

Like the first Pro, the Pro 2 retains impressive 10ATM water resistance, alongside 15 MIL-STD-810G certifications, while its 500mAh battery is touted at lasting between 10 and 24 days (based on usage habits).
