Launched at CES 2020, Withings’ ScanWatch arrived as the company’s most-capable hybrid smartwatch to date and the newly unveiled Horizon special edition adds a touch of luxury on top of some already-capable hardware.
The vanilla ScanWatch is already an attractive timepiece, dressed in brushed stainless steel, with a face protected by sapphire glass. The Horizon’s 43mm casing comes rendered in lighter but stronger titanium and takes its styling cues from iconic diver’s watches, like Rolex’s Submariner and Omega’s Seamaster ranges.
A bold analogue face and hands inlaid with glowing LumiNova pigment mean it can be viewed in low light and to complement the dive watch aesthetic, Withings has also upped the Horizon’s swim-proofing to 10ATM (i.e. rated to be taken down to approximately 100m).
That’s double that of the standard ScanWatch and only really matched by the likes of the Amazfit T-Rex Pro and Garmin Fenix 3, in the smartwatch space, right now; still impressive, even if it does fall short of the depths true dive watches (like the Submariner’s 30ATM rating).
The Horizon can be had with a dark blue or dark green face and comes fitted with a 316L stainless steel rotating bezel and oyster bracelet, the latter of which can be swapped out for an included fluoroelastomer band, that’s better suited to working out, if desired.
Beyond the distinct design changes, the Horizon retains the classic ScanWatch’s feature set, with an inlaid subdial that logs your daily activity and a PMOLED display that relays mobile notifications, current heart rate, the weather, steps and more. The rotating digital crown is used to facilitate the watch’s ECG functionality (which also includes Afib detection), while sleep (include breathing disturbances – a possible indication of sleep apnea), blood oxygen and heart rate monitoring are on the table too.
As with the vanilla ScanWatch, the Horizon edition retains the same 30 days of use per charge, with a power reserve mode offering up an additional 20 days of wear, at the expense of some functionality. The watch connects to your iPhone or Android phone via Withings’ HealthMate app.
While the Horizon was announced and launched on 29 September in Europe, Asia and Australia, it’s also set to arrive in the US later this year, with Withings still awaiting FDA approval for some of the ScanWatch range’s health and wellbeing features.
The Withings ScanWatch Horizon is priced at £499.95 (after tax)/€499.95/US$499.95 and is available direct from Withings’ website (UK, France, Spain, US).
