New IMDb app uses games to choose streaming recommendations

If you are always stuck on which film or series to watch when streaming at home, then a new IMDb app may have the answer. IMDb What to Watch is exclusive to Amazon Fire TV users in America and should help make choosing content more fun and streamlined.

The app offers a series of interactive mini-games, which will then produce a tailored list of movies and films based on the results. The three games on offer are:

Quick Draw: This quickly sifts through a series of film and TV options and draws three options to choose from. Users can click ‘deal cards’ to get a fresh trio of picks, should nothing be suitable

Watch Challenge: Players can watch and rate films, and then collect digital stamps based on what they have seen. This list includes 250 top movies from IMDb, as well as popular franchises and themed lists

This or That: Players will answer a series of questions to help determine their mood. The game will then generate different genre titles that suit that mood. Players can refresh choices and specify the length of what they want to watch

Users can also see the ratings of top movies and TV shows and the runtimes to help inform viewing decisions.

In addition, enabling the “Your Services” only displays titles from select streaming services, so the lists do not show content that you do not have a subscription for. You can also access Parents Guide information in the picks gallery, and sensitive content will be flagged.

There are also two more games on the way in the future called Build-a-Cast and Time Machine. The app is currently available on Fire TV devices running FOS6 and FOS7 and on Fire TV Stick (2nd Generation). Amazon has confirmed that the app will expand to more regions and devices in the future.

You do not need an IMDb account to sign up for IMDb What to Watch, but Amazon claims that it will help the watch lists become more tailored. In addition, you can sign up for notifications for when the new games drop. You don’t need an Amazon Prime Video account to use IMDb What to Watch.

The new app comes after Amazon announced that its free content app, IMDb TV, will be rebranded to Amazon Freevee. You can read more on Amazon’s help page.
