- Nothing OS 4.0 coming soon
- Refreshed design, Extra Dark Mode, AI monitoring tool
- Nothing Ear (3) earphones announced
British tech company Nothing has previewed Nothing OS 4.0, its new smartphone UI based on Android 16, revealing some unique features.
Nothing first announced its NOS 4.0 at the launch of the Nothing Phone (3) back in early July, with a release window of “early autumn”. Ahead of that rollout, Nothing has issued a post detailing some of the improvements coming to Nothing phones.
With the promise of a more fluid and intuitive design, we can expect a cleaner Quick Settings menu, a more responsive lock screen and always-on display, and a selection of reimagined lock screen clocks.
A new Extra Dark Mode promises to go even further with Nothing’s signature dark aesthetic. The additional level of contrast should save even more power and ease eye strain, while looking cool in the process.
Elsewhere, and AI Usage Dashboard will keep you up to date on all those clever LLMs (Large Language Models) whirring in the background. That’s one handy AI feature you won’t find on the Google Pixel 10 Pro.
There’s also a new Pop-up View, which lets you use two floating apps simultaneously. Swipe up from the bottom edge to minimise an app, then pull down to expand it.

Nothing is also promising improvements to the photographic experience, with an upgraded Camera and smarter Gallery. Expect new controls and creative presets, though specific details haven’t yet been revealed.
According to Nothing, “NOS 4.0 will soon reach Nothing smartphones”. We don’t get any specifics on timings or models, but we’d expect it to hit the Nothing Phone (3) first.
Nothing says that it’s launching its Open Beta testing program soon, so some in the Nothing community will soon be able to get a taste of this Android 16-based UI.

In related news, Nothing has announced its new earphones, with a Super Mic feature that can always hear you on calls, regardless of the level of background noise.
The new design features a more ergonomic shape and 100% anodised recycled aluminium on the case.
The earphones feature 12mm dynamic drivers and support up to 45db of Adaptive Noise Cancellation. There’s also support for Hi-Res LDAC audio at 24-bit, plus enough battery life for up to 10 hours of continuous playback.
They cost £119/$79, and are available now from the Nothing website.
