Roku and TCL are teaming up to release a new line of TVs in the UK. Coming in both HD and 4K UHD, the TCL televisions will have Roku OS 10 straight out of the box and will go on sale this month at budget prices.
The 4K TV range comes in four sizes, 43-, 50-, 55- and 65in, whilst the HD line comes in two sizes, 32- and 40in (the latter comes with a Full HD panel). All devices support HDR Pro which uses Dynamic Colour Enhancement through 3D LUT technology.
The 4K range comes with support for HDR10 and Dolby Vision – a dynamic HDR format used in professional video production. If you want the full cinematic experience, you can always connect an accompanying soundbar with Dolby Atmos.
As it’s a Roku TV, the devices operate through the simple Roku interface. For those who want some free content to watch, the TVs come with Freeview Play, as well as The Roku Channel which features over 25,000 hours’ worth of content, including originals from the now-defunct streaming platform, Quibi.
The interface includes some of the most popular streaming apps such as Netflix, Amazon Prime Video, Disney+, Apple TV+, BT Sport, BBC iPlayer, ITV Hub, All 4, My 5 and more.
The 4K TVs have Ultra HD upscaling for content at lower resolutions, as well as a game mode with 15ms input lag. The latter works well with the Roku OS 10 Automatic Game Console Configuration, which detects when a console is connected and adjusts the TV panel settings automatically.
The TVs can be controlled via voice via Google Assistant or Alexa enabled devices and can be integrated with Apple’s Homekit for use with Siri. Apple users can also use AirPlay to cast content straight from their iPhones on the TV.
TCL has already created Roku TVs in other markets across the world. The brand released the first TVs in the USA in 2014 and then expanded to Canada and Mexico. The UK is the first country in Europe to receive these TVs.
