When does Mandalorian season three start?

Originally, The Mandalorian season three was pegged for an early 2022 release date. It was supposed to release at the end of 2021, but instead a new show – The Book of Boba Fett – will take this slot. 

However, there could be an even longer wait in store. Pedro Pascal let slip in an interview to Variety that filming hasn’t even started yet – so there’d have to be a quick turnaround to hit the first few months of 2022. Hopefully we’ll still see it arrive sometime in that year.

In case you were confused by the post-credits scene at the end of season two, The Book of Boba Fett will be an entirely separate storyline to The Mandalorian, and as far as we know Pascal will still be in the lead role. 

Pre-production on The Mandalorian has already begun. that Jon Favreau has been writing the scripts “for a while” and that the art department is in full swing too.

The pandemic won’t get in the way either. Favreau that the show is “on schedule” to enter production “before the end of the year,” citing the unique nature of the show’s production as a reason it should be able to go ahead.

“We’re in very small situations and oftentimes we have a lot of characters in masks,” he said. “And we also have a lot of digital work that augments things. So we’re a show that’s probably well-equipped to be flexible based on the protocols that are emerging surrounding work restarting.”

Who’s in the cast?

Disney hasn’t confirmed any cast members as of yet, however we expect Pedro Pascal to return to the leading role of Din Djarin (AKA Mando). According to , Pascal’s stunt double Brandon Wayne put up a (now deleted) Instagram post confirming Pascal would return in retaliation to rumours that he had left The Mandalorian. 

As for who will be joining him, we could expect to see the returns of Rocky’s Carl Weathers, and of course the big bad of the show, Breaking Bad’s Giancarlo Esposito. We also expect to return as Bo-Katan Kryze, the original wielder of the Darksaber, as this was one of the plot-arcs left open-ended post-season two. 

One actor who won’t be returning is Gina Carano as Cara Dune. reported that Lucasfilm released the following statement:

“Gina Carano is not currently employed by Lucasfilm and there are no plans for her to be in the future. Nevertheless, her social media posts denigrating people based on their cultural and religious identities are abhorrent and unacceptable.”

This comes off the back of Carano sharing an anti-Semitic story on her Instagram, as well as months of other posts supporting anti-mask behaviour, spreading conspiracies about the US election, denouncing the use of pronouns and supporting posts that mocked the Black Lives Matter movement. 

Cara Dune was a major character in The Mandalorian and had been set up to possibly play a big part in The Rangers of the New Republic. According to , a spokesperson from Lucasfilm has confirmed that the character will not be recast. 

Rosario Dawson will be starring in her own spin-off series as Ahsoka Tano – but we could see her make another cameo appearance, as her show takes place in the same timeline as The Mandalorian. We also believe that Ahsoka will air after season three of Mando, so her coming in to set up her spin-off show would make sense. 

Temuera Morrison played quite a pivotal role as Boba Fett in season two. By the time season three airs, his own series will have already concluded. However, we wouldn’t be surprised to see crossovers with both characters once again – and perhaps an appearance from Ming-Na Wen as sniper Fennec Shand.

Who will write and direct season three?

Behind the cameras, Jon Favreau, who’s a dab hand at both producing and directing and brought us Iron Man and The Jungle Book, is the showrunner and lead writer for the series, though he’s ably assisted by Star Wars: Clone Wars TV veteran Dave Filoni.

What to expect from season three

Season two of The Mandalorian had probably the most shocking guest appearance we’ve ever had in the show. The Jedi Master himself – a young Luke Skywalker – came aboard Moff Gideon’s light cruiser and single-handedly destroyed all the Dark Troopers with complete ease. 

Once he’d cleaned out the trash, he revealed that he had arrived by answering the call from Grogu (AKA The Child and/or Baby Yoda), and was here to train him in the ways of the Jedi. After a heart-breaking goodbye between Mando and Baby Yoda, Luke left with Grogu in tow. 

This begs the obvious question – will we ever see Grogu again? We expect the cutest cast member will make a return, but not right right away. It’s likely that most of the Jedi training will take place off-screen, namely because of how difficult and expensive it must be to animate a de-aged version of Mark Hamill. 

If Grogu does return, we expect it will be halfway through the season – perhaps to save Mando from a sticky situation and reveal what he’s learnt with his time with Luke.

Then there’s also the issue of the Darksaber. Moff Gideon revealed that Mando was rightful winner of the weapon after defeating him in combat. This came as a blow to Bo-Katan, as she needs the blade to reclaim the throne of Mandalore.

In order for her to win the Darksaber, she’d need to defeat Mando in combat – so we expect this issue to be explored in season three. As far as we know, Mando has no need nor want for the Darksaber – but could the absence of Grogu change his priorities?

Finally, we still have the Imperial forces to deal with. Gideon may be captured for now, but he’s not dead yet. Stragglers of the Empire are still live within the galaxy, and this show looks to be setting up for how the First Order came to be. The cloning and experimentations with Grogu’s blood seems to be hinting towards how Snoke was created – but it could be something else entirely. 

Thanks to Ahsoka, we also know that Grand Admiral Thrawn is knocking about somewhere in the galaxy. Therefore if we see Rosario Dawson make another guest appearance, we’re sure Thrawn will be brought up once again.
