Watch the final trailer for The Falcon and the Winter Soldier

Marvel is one of the biggest draws of Disney Plus, with a whole host of live-action shows planned to air over the next few years. The Falcon and the Winter Soldier is one of the first in line, following the flying ex-soldier Sam Wilson (Anthony Mackie) and Cap’s best friend and former foe, Bucky Barnes (Sebastian Stan).

This will be just one of many shows to play an integral part of phase four of the MCU, with more than ten other titles confirmed for 2020, 2021 and beyond. But what exactly will The Falcon and the Winter Soldier be about, and when will it kick off? We’ve drilled the internet for all the details you need.

When does The Falcon and the Winter Soldier start?

The Falcon and the Winter Soldier is set to arrive on Disney+ on 19 March 2021 at 8am GMT meaning it’s out now with new episodes every Friday. You can see a full episode guide here.

That’s a serious delay from what was originally intended to be an August 2020 premiere, but of course, we have Covid-19 to blame for that.

The series consists of six episodes, and Anthony Mackie described the show as “a six or eight-hour movie” in an interview with Variety. Considering that it cost $150 million to make, its no wonder.

The Falcon and the Winter Soldier trailers and posters

The first trailer which dropped for the show is a doozy, especially the final aerial action sequence:

The second trailer gives us more of a look at other characters in action, including Sharon Carter and Baron Zemo. We also get to see a glimpse at the dynamic between the two leads – expect lots of banter:

The final trailer meanwhile showed off Sam getting to grips with the shield, and gave us a tease of what to expect from John Walker.

We also have the official poster:

We also have a glimpse of the full costumes for all the characters thanks to the latest posters. Most of these we have seen before – with the exception of Baron Zemo, who is in his full villain garb, purple balaclava and all. You can see these below:

Twitter has revealed another teaser, which shows some of the banter that the two leads will have:

What do we know about the plot of The Falcon and the Winter Soldier?

Spoilers for past films in the MCU, including Avengers: Endgame from here on out.

Sam and Bucky will be dealing with the aftermath of the absence of Cap now that he’s loving life in retirement; especially considering that the shield was passed on to Sam Wilson.

This is actually a plot from one of the comics, in which Falcon takes up the mantle of Cap, wearing his own red, white and blue getup, combining the all-American shield and his mechanical wings into a new style of superhero.

Writer Marc Bernadin claimed in a podcast that the show will explore the government’s disapproval of Wilson becoming the new Captain America. Anthony Mackie expanded on this in a quote to Disney, stating that “Sam considers the shield a representation of the country that we live in. There’s a lot of trepidation as far as how does a Black man represent a country that does not represent him?”.

We imagine that the show will also plant the seeds for Falcon to act as Cap in the big future MCU team-up movies – AKA, the untitled fifth Avengers film.

This theory is further supported by the fact that MCU insider Charles Murphy seems to believe that series will get a name change if its renewed for a second season. Perhaps ‘Captain America and The White Wolf’?.

Concept art for the show has also revealed that the government will have plans to replace Captain America with their own equivalent: John Walker/US Agent (Wyatt Russell). We won’t spoil his role from the comics, but we have a feeling that he’s bad news.

As for Bucky? Well, as we’re seeing the return of Daniel Bruhl’s Baron Zemo, we can’t help but wonder if Bucky will be dragged back into his PTSD phase of The Winter Soldier using the mind techniques that were brought to fruition in Civil War.

Or perhaps we’ll see Bucky actually acclimatising to the world a little bit. After all, he’s spent the majority of his time on the run and in hiding on Wakanda. Sebastian Stan stated to Disney that Bucky is “pretty lost and having an identity crisis again”, and is trying to adjust to living in the modern day – but even the most basic things aren’t easy.

Cinema Blend has reported that Zemo will interact with both of the protagonists – but his appearance could be a misdirect. We may see the former villain change his ways to create a truce and unite against John Walker.

Another character confirmed for the series is Sharon Carter (Emily Van Camp), who will likely be the point of contact in S.H.I.E.L.D that Barnes and Wilson report to for their missions. Hopefully these antics will make us all forget about the vaguely incestuous plot line between her and Steve Rogers… *shudders*.

Carl Lumbly – best known for his role on Supergirl – will also be joining the fold according to Deadline. We don’t yet know who he’ll be, but rumours circulating indicate he could possibly be an older version of Isaiah Bradley – a character from the short comic series Truth: Red, White, & Black, in which African Americans are used as test subjects for a Super Soldier serum by the government.

It also looks like we’re getting an appearance from another Avenger. In BroBible’s Post-Credit Podcast, Don Cheadle revealed that his character – James “Rhodey” Rhodes – ‘shows up’ in The Falcon and The Winter Soldier. However, we don’t know for how long, or when this will be.

Other actors confirmed to star in the series include Desmond Chiam, Miki Ishikawa, Noah Mills and Danny Ramirez. We don’t know yet what their roles will be – but no doubt more plot points will emerge over the coming months.

According to writer Derek Kolstad, there will be some familiar faces from the universe, with “characters from the earliest Marvel movies…coming back”. We don’t know who this could be – but its nice to see how this show is tying into very early MCU lore.

Will The Falcon and The Winter Soldier get renewed for a second season?

According to star of the show Anthony Mackie – no. Mackie gave an interview to Variety and stated that no discussions about a follow-up season have taken place yet.

Of course this could be to keep any rumours under wraps – we’ll likely find out more when the show comes to an end.
