Will we see the OnePlus 11 in 2022?

OnePlus surprised many of us in 2022 by not releasing a standard version of the OnePlus 10, but instead going straight to the OnePlus 10 Pro.

Rumours still persist that the non-Pro model could emerge – perhaps alongside a new Ultra model – but as we look forward to what the OnePlus 11 will hold it’s unclear which models will launch. Here’s all we know so far about the OnePlus 11.

When will the OnePlus 11 be released?

There’s been no word from OnePlus about when the 11 or 11 Pro will arrive. While we’d usually just look to the previous release patterns to give us an indication of when the new model will arrive, this is confused by reports that the standard OnePlus 10 may still appear, even though the 10 Pro has been out since January in China and globally from March.

The weird thing is that OnePlus co-founder Pete Lau told TechRadar that there are no plans for other phones in the 10 series, but then in April @OnLeaks posted on Twitter that there would be a standard 10 and also, in collaboration with Indian tech site Digit, outlined the specs. He’s usually quite accurate with his leaks, so this does hurl a big tabby among those pigeons.

So, with Digit reporting that the OnePlus 10 could actually arrive in August 2022, perhaps alongside or ahead of a OnePlus 10 Ultra, it would seem likely then that OnePlus would wait the normal calendar year before introducing its successor. Unless, of course, the rumoured OnePlus 10 is in fact the OnePlus 11. Confused yet?

If we look at the previous global release schedules for the OnePlus flagships, it works out like this:

  • OnePlus 10 Pro – March 2022
  • OnePlus 9 & 9 Pro – March 2021
  • OnePlus 8T – October 2020
  • OnePlus 8 & 8 Pro – April 2020

As you might notice there have been a few variations from the standard patterns. First, there was no 9T model. The T-series usually launched about 6 months after the standard (i.e. 8 then 8T), but that didn’t happen in 2021. Then there was no OnePlus 10 (at least not yet), meaning the gap between flagship releases was one year.

So, if OnePlus holds to this new schedule, it would be March 2023 when we see the OnePlus 11 Pro. But, if the OnePlus 10 does turn up in August, then the OnePlus 11 could well arrive in August 2023, while the 11 Pro could still launch in March.

How much will the OnePlus 11 cost?

As there’s no confirmation from OnePlus yet about pricing, we’ll use the previous models to put us in the picture. Here’s the pricing of the last few flagships:

  • OnePlus 10 Pro – £799/$899/€899
  • OnePlus 9 – $729/£629/€699
  • OnePlus 9 Pro – £829/$999/€899/
  • OnePlus 8T – £549/$649/€649

If OnePlus only goes with a Pro model for the 11-series, then it will probably be close to the price of the current 10 Pro, otherwise we’ll hope to see something a bit cheaper, along the lines of the OnePlus 9. This might not quite work out this simply though, as the world-wide chip shortage, plus the disruptions to manufacturing and distribution caused by Covid and the Ukrainian invasion by Russia are all beginning to drive up prices.

What features and specs will we see in the OnePlus 11?

If the report by @OnLeaks proves to be accurate about specs but turns out to be for the next-gen phone, then the OnePlus 11 could well come with the following hardware:

  • 6.7-inch Full HD+ AMOLED LTPO display with 120Hz refresh rate
  • Snapdragon 8 Gen1+ or MediaTek Dimensity 9000 SoC
  • 8GB/12GB RAM
  • 128GB/256GB Storage
  • 50Mp Wide camera
  • 16Mp Ultra Wide camera
  • 2Mp Macro camera
  • 32Mp selfie camera
  • 4,800mAh battery with 150W Fast Charging
  • Android 12
  • Oxygen OS 12

In other reports we’ve also seen mentions of a magnetic rotating camera for the OnePlus 11 Pro. Let’s Go Digital obtained schematics from a patent application made by OnePlus that shows the feature.

This innovation seems to enable users to be able to create new angles for photos, adjust the camera for difficult situations where the photographer would have to contort themselves into weird positions to capture the image, while also acting as a form of stabilisation for video footage.

Working with designer Technizo Concepts, the site created several concepts to show how the finished device may turn out.

Whether OnePlus surprises everyone again and sneaks out the standard 10 this year or holds back for another only-Pro 2023, we’re looking forward to what the next generation may bring.
