Fallout: Everything you need to know about the Amazon TV series
Initiated in 1997, Fallout is one of the most popular post-apocalyptic game series. The retro-futuristic tale spans decades and centuries after the atomic cataclysm that destroyed the Earth. Soon, gamers and non-gamers alike will have the opportunity to delve into the world of Fallout, as Amazon Prime Video is creating a TV show based on the franchise.
Following the success of series like The Last of Us, Arcane and Halo, another adaptation of a popular game comes as no surprise. Amazon acquired the rights to Fallout in 2020 and entrusted the series to Jonathan Nolan and Lisa Joy, with their company Kilter Films. The choice seems well-thought-out, considering the duo previously created the futuristic series Westworld for HBO.
In addition to Nolan, Joy, and Athena Wickham from Kilter Films, the executive producer for the show is Todd Howard, who directed several games in the Fallout franchise. The executive team is supported by James Altman from Bethesda Softworks.
The showrunners for the series are Geneva Robertson-Dworet and Graham Wagner, who also work as writers and executive producers on the project.
Fallout series release date
The series will debut on Prime Videoon Friday, 12 April 2024. Amazon’s Fallout is set to consist of 10 episodes.
Fallout series plot
Amazon’s Fallout isn’t a direct adaptation of any game from the franchise but rather a standalone story that will become a canon of the Fallout universe.
The series is set in a dangerous future world, 200 years after the atomic war that almost wiped humanity from the face of the Earth. Those who survived live in shelters called Vaults, hiding from mutants, ghouls, and giant insects.
In the wastelands that were once the United States, the so-called Brotherhood of Steel operates – an organisation tasked with overseeing advanced technology. The Brotherhood soldiers own a valuable power armours – steel, futuristic suits designed to protect and enhance the wearer’s strength.
The official synopsis for the show reads:
Fallout takes place in a future, post-apocalyptic Los Angeles. Citizens must live in underground bunkers to protect themselves from radiation, mutants and bandits after nuclear annihilation. The story begins in Vault 33, one such bunker that is a prominent setting in the video games.
The world of Fallout is filled with a mix of modern technology and a 1950s aesthetic. In an interview for Vanity Fair, the series creators stated that the show features the characteristic humour of the games and themes related to social inequality.
