James Gunn isn’t slowing down. Despite directing a new Superman movie, the DC Studios chief has announced that he’s finally started filming the second season of Peacemaker.
The rogue superhero (or rather, villain) first appeared onscreen in 2021 in Gunn’s campy film The Suicide Squad. Christopher Smith, aka Peacemaker, was rude, stiff, and not the sharpest tool in the shed, but he captivated the audience. DC executives quickly decided then to give him a standalone show.
The Peacemaker series debuted on Max in 2022 and was a smash hit. The black humour and camp aesthetics refreshed the formula of DC’s superhero stories. The opening credits sequence, fuelled by the banger Do Ya Wanna Taste It, absolutely slayed.
The season finale left fans hungry for more Peacemaker. The second season was announced shortly afterwards; unfortunately, there was no information about its production for a long time.
However, James Gunn hasn’t forgotten about Christopher Smith. Peacemaker season 2 is definitely happening, and here’s everything we know about it.
When will Peacemaker season 2 be released?
According to James Gunn, shooting for the second instalment of Peacemaker started on 13 April 2024.
The new season will be part of the DCU Chapter One: Gods and Monsters project, developed by James Gunn and Peter Safran, the heads of DC Studios.
The first entry in the rebooted universe will be Superman, scheduled for release on 11 July 2025. Therefore, Peacemaker season 2 will likely premiere after that date, perhaps in the fall of 2025.
Initially, the Waller series, telling the story of Amanda Waller, was to appear before the new instalment of Peacemaker. Ultimately, Gunn gave up on this idea – the series about the head of the Task Force X program will premiere after Peacemaker season 2.
What will the plot of Peacemaker season 2 involve?
So far, no specific information about the new season’s plot has been revealed.
However, all indications are that it will be a completely new story. James Gunn has announced that season 1 won’t be considered DCU canon, although certain events from Peacemaker’s past will be relevant.
According to the chief of DC Studios, the new Superman movie will impact the second season of Peacemaker.
Which cast members will return for Peacemaker season 2?
So far, DC hasn’t announced the cast for the new episodes of the series. However, it’s hard to imagine a second season of Peacemaker without the following names:
- John Cena as Peacemaker / Christopher Smith
- Danielle Brooks as Leota Adebayo, the daughter of Amanda Waller
- Jennifer Holland as Agent Emilia Harcourt, the special ops expert of the team
- Freddie Stroma as Adrian Chase / Vigilante
- Steve Agee as John Economos, the team’s tech expert
- Viola Davis as Amanda Waller
- Nhut Le as Judomaster
